Puerto Rican Crested Toad

Visual Description

In front of you is a supersized toad rising over three feet tall, its body lifted and full, with a wide, rounded belly that curves outward. As you approach, you can reach up to explore its face, which tilts slightly upward as if it is looking toward the sky.

Start at the head, where you’ll feel a series of raised ridges and bony crests. These begin above the eyes and continue back along the head, forming a distinct crown-like shape. Behind the eyes, the surface changes again—slightly raised and elongated—marking the area of the toad’s parotoid glands, which in life produce defensive toxins.

The eyes themselves are large and prominent, set high on the head. Their position gives the toad a wide field of view, and in life, they appear golden and reflective. As you move your hands down from the head, the skin becomes textured with small bumps, giving the body a rough, uneven feel.

Follow the form down to the torso, where the toad’s large, rotund belly expands outward. This fullness reflects its ability to store water and adapt to dry environments. Its limbs are shorter and sturdy, supporting its weight in a grounded, stable stance.

This sculpture captures a toad that feels both solid and expressive—its upward gaze, crowned head, and full body creating a strong and memorable presence.
