Making A Difference
Bornean orangutan populations have declined by over 50% since the 1960s due to hunting, black market trade, and habitat loss. The logging industry has led to a 55% loss in habitat since the turn of the century. Organizations like the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation work to rehabilitate orangutans, relocate them from areas of conflict to protected lands, conserve orangutan ecosystems, and educate local communities on orangutan conservation. Zoos around the US and Canada contribute to research about this exceptionally intelligent animal’s behavior.
Orangutan mothers care for their male offspring until about age 8, and their female offspring into their teens.
