Making A Difference
This tiny, poisonous frog is Critically Endangered and has not been seen in the wild since 2009. Chytrid fungus, habitat destruction and illegal collecting have devastated golden frog populations. Fortunately, organizations like Project Golden Frog, a network of zoos and sanctuaries in Panama and around the world, are making incredible strides to grow captive golden frog populations, contribute to field work, and help build community engagement and infrastructure in Panama. Their goal is to eventually reintroduce the species to Panama once its habitat is restored and chytrid fungus is no longer a threat.
Chytrid fungus damages frogs’ nervous system and skin. Frogs breathe through their skin, so the fungus badly impedes their breathing.
