Common Mudpuppy

Visual Description

In front of you is a long sculpture of a Mudpuppy, stretched out close to the ground and five times larger than it is in real life. As you reach out, you’ll feel a smooth, slightly slick surface that suggests wet skin, with subtle variations that create a marbled pattern across the body.

Move toward the head, where you’ll find one of its most distinctive features—soft, feathery gills extending out from both sides. These branch outward like delicate plumes, and in life, they gently wave in the water as the animal breathes.

As you continue along the body, you’ll notice how it stays low and streamlined, built for gliding through water. The torso is rounded and smooth, gradually tapering as you move toward the tail.

At the back, the tail curves off to one side, wide and flattened like a paddle. This shape helps the mudpuppy swim, pushing against the water with steady, side-to-side motion.

This sculpture captures an animal that is rarely seen—quiet, hidden beneath the surface, and perfectly adapted to life in the water.
